What is power factor correction?

Any electrical equipment, whose functioning is basing on alternating magnetic field, is the source of the so called inductive reactive electrical power Q. Such equipment is all electrical motors, transformers, and also lines.

The reactive electrical power is unavoidable for both generation and maintenance of the necessary alternating magnetic field, but in no circumstances it can be converted into the active power W.The electrical current directly related to the mentioned inductive reactive power is called inductive current and is lagging by 90 to the actual network voltage. To the same 90 is also lagging the inductive reactive power to the active power. Electrical generators as well as lines are therefore loaded by the addition of both active and inductive reactive power. The consumption of the inductive reactive power is charged by electrical utilities. The mathematical geometrical addition of active and reactive power is called apparent power S. The ratio inductive reactive power to apparent power is called power factor cosφ.

 
The necessity for the inductive power is therefore done by nature, it is an not avoidable evil and it represents the fully inefficient load for both generators and lines. Luckily there is a simple technical mean to outsmart this evil. Alternating current flowing through electrical capacitors is by phase directly opposed to the inductive current, it is leading the network voltage by 90. The conclusion is logical: electrical capacitors should be connected to the network, as close to the combined active-inductive load as possible, and the capacitor current shall be ideally equal to the inductive current. This technical procedure is called power factor correction.
